My Road to Recovery
Hi Everyone, Many of you will have heard about my crash this past March while on the Canadian Ski Quest Jackson Hole tour. I managed to rupture my patella tendon. Like most ski related injuries, mine happened on easy terrain, actually after I had stopped really skiing. There was no real glory in it at all; most people encourage me to make something up about what happened. No it did not happen on Corbett’s Couloir while I was valiantly recuing a Canadian Ski Quest guest, it happened over a small jump at the bottom of a run called Dick’s Ditch (a favorite among Jackson Hole Resort’s 7 year old clientele). Small kids type jump, I went for it, lost my balance, left ski came off, it impacted my right kneecap, and ruptured my patella tendon. Yes it did hurt!
When the Doctor told me it was my patella tendon my initial reaction was “great, I thought I broke my leg”. However it turns out that a broken bone heals faster than a broken tendon. It has now been three months, I had two months in a full leg cast, and I am still on crutches. I have been told it will be 6 months before I will be doing what I want to do and one year before I am doing it how I want to do it. For now I am waiting and working on it, looking forward to being able to complete a pedal stroke on my bicycle and to skiing again. My recovery is going well and even though I am still on crutches, I actually am well ahead of the scheduled recovery. The good news is that my surgeon expects a 100% recovery, something that can not be said for a lot of injuries. I will be back skiing and teaching for the 2010 winter, which is the most important thing for me. Plus I may even bring my skis to New Zealand with me. |
Canadian Ski Quest Returns to New Zealand in 2009 with Mike ManaraDue to my fitness circumstances I had not planned on returning to New Zealand with Canadian Ski Quest this season, but I have had been getting quite a bit of encouragement from regulars to put a program together.August 22-29 2009 Canadian Ski Quest will again revisit New Zealand. Mike Manara and I will lead a tour from Lake Ohau, to Mt. Potts Heliskiing and then on to Mt. Hutt. I will be doing most of the driving while lucky Mike will do the skiing with the group. This tour has always been a fantastic time full of adventure, laughs, and above all incredible skiing experiences.
